Hadrian's Wall Country

A Brief History

The Haltwhistle Gilsland area is steeped in history, literally wherever you go in the city centre you are walking in the footsteps of Brigantian tribes, Roman soldiers, early missionaries, medieval traders, Cromwellian troops, Jacobite rebels and countless generations of ordinary people that once occupied this great Border land.

Getting Around

Haltwhistle, despite it's rural location, has good road and railway networks and is within easy reach of several major airports. Those arriving by car or coach have a choice of three exits from the M6 motorway allowing easy access to the A69 from the West or from the East at the Newcastle side. The A69 is linked in all directions connecting with the local towns of Brampton, Penrith, Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Longtown and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

A Gateway To

Gilsland, Hadrian's Wall country, is ideally located between Scotland and the Lake District and both are easily reached by car. To the North East is Hadrian’s wall, a world heritage site that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. Just over the border are the Scottish towns of Gretna and Dumfries. East of Carlisle are the wild Pennine moors and the picturesque villages of the Eden Valley.
